A carpet without great carpet underlay is like a Marmite sandwich without the Marmite. But what makes it great? There’s a lot of science stuff involved.

A good quality underlay can help extend the life of your carpet as well as making it more comfortable. The better the underlay, the more thermal insulation you obtain and it also reduces noise transfer if you're carpeting upstairs in your house.  So make sure you spend a little extra time considering your underlay choice when you're making a choice about the carpet, it will be well worth it.

Choosing your carpet underlay

Consider the type of wear and tear the carpet underlay will be exposed to. Bedrooms, lounge areas, stairs, and other lightly trafficked rooms can use thicker, softer underlay. Thin, firm underlay is ideal for heavily trafficked areas.

In general, look for carpet underlay that’s between 10-12mm thick, with a density of 90 kilograms per cubic metre.

Beyond IFD

Carpet underlay is like a sponge, soaking up liquid from rainy-day foot traffic or accidental spills if there's nothing between the padding and the carpet backing. The solution? Look for underlay with a breathable moisture barrier designed to protect your subfloor and make cleaning easier.
